Should there be play in my axle shaft?

Should there be play in my axle shaft?

Axles are supposed to move like that to allow for suspension flex. The CV joint is a flexible joint so some play in the shaft is OK, but there should be no play of the joint other than its intended movement. If you hear clunking, it would most likely be a bad engine mount or transmission mount.

Are axles supposed to move?

Axles are rods or shafts that connect to the drive wheels. The main purpose of axles is to transfer power from the transmission to the wheels. As the axle turns, the wheels go around, and without a functioning axle, wheels do not move.

What does it mean when rear end axle play?

Basicaly I can pull out on the tires when I have it raised and they seem to move out more than they should and if it was parked and it shook the bed of the truck you can hear a kinda I guess you could call it a hitting noise like if you hit a piece of metal against wood or something like that.

Where is the fill plug on the rear axle?

Jack up the rear of the car and locate the fill plug on the front of the driver’s side which is about even in height with the pinion and 3 inches to the rear but facing forward (not on the rear of the assembly). Using the socket on the end of a ~6 inch 3/8 extension, get full engagement on the hex head and remove the fill plug.

How to fill a hole in a rear axle driveline?

Access is so tough that it is not possible to get the fill plug started in the threads by hand. Use a leftover piece of heater hose ~4 inches long stuck on the end of the 3/8 extension flipped backwards so the the heater hose fits tight on it, then engage the other end of the hose on the 13mm hex nut to get the plug threads engaged in the hole.

Why is my rear end axle too thin?

The major cause for concern is if there has been some wear on the C-clip that holds the axle in place causing the C-clip to be too thin. Only check I know of is to open the diff and physically remove the c-clip to inspect.

How big is a GM 10 bolt axle?

Its just the standard 10 bolt axle so its nothing special. Thanks for your time and help all! I don’t know if there is a spec on these for axle end play, but some in/out movement (1/4 inch or so) is normal for a semi floating axle like the GM 10 bolt.

What to do if GM rear axle breaks?

I had a GM rear axle break the horseshoe clip and axle walk out of the housing tire and drum included. I say check the clips to be safe, not hard to do. What they all said. Would be a good idea to pull the cover so you can inspect or remove the C-clips. Fill her up with some Mobil 75W-90 and go.
