The old engine was full of nasty slug, so for sure I will at least replace or bypass the cooler, no way I’m letting that nasty junk back in my new engine. I would bypass it. All you need is GM part# 3952301 (adaptor) and (2)GM part# 3951644 bolts. That will take the place of the exsisting oil filter adaptor for the cooler lines.
What happens if you plug in an oil cooler?
If you only removed the lines and tapped and plugged the holes then you would force oil to flow through the bypass which is very small and you’ll end up with an oil filter that will explode because the oil can’t flow fast enough through the bypass and then pressure builds in the filter and will blow it apart.

Can you use a pf52 oil cooler adapter?
Using the L99 adapter just deletes the ports for the cooler lines all together, since the L99 doesn’t use a cooler. The oil filter size doesn’t change, you can still use the PF52 or equivalent. You can probably find an adapter cheap at the junkyard if it’s a cost issue. Then you just have to get the gaskets for the adapter, which are also cheap.

Pretty sure you can’t just plug the lines. 100% of the oil supply to the engine goes thru the cooler, so plugging the lines would starve the engine of oil. It’s not like the engine cooling system where the thermostat cuts off flow to the radiator until the engine is warm. Similarly one may ask, can you bypass an oil cooler?

Generally, oil filters are so good now yet they don’t present backpressure problems once the oil is up to temperature. Of course, running a 10w30 or a 5w30 oil is also a good idea as that oil will be thinner when it’s cold, making it easier to pump through the filter.

For average day to day use, it isn’t going to make a difference. There have been more motors with out the oil cooler in the past then there has. They are known to start leaks on the hoses and so you are introducing a more complicated structure for little gain.
