It has had an intermittent A/C problem since new. Dealer has been no help other than changing some parts, including TXV, some at their expense, some at ours.

The thermatic switch is in the evaporator core, it shuts the power off to the low preasure switch/clutch. Be sure the drain tube for the evaporator is clear. Set to full cold turn on AC ,idle will go up a few rpm to compensate for compressor drag and engine fan will kick in providing air flow over coil ,when desired temp is reached thermostat will cut off compressor. So depends on outside ambient temp how long compressor runs.
