Over time, the plastic rod clips that connect the latch to the tailgate rods can wear out and break. The tailgate latch mechanism may also rust or seize from exposure to the elements.

You insert the clip into the hole in the latch mechanism from behind with the ‘tail’ rotated out of the way. You then insert the rod through the center of the hole and clip, then rotate the tail end so it snaps around the rod. I was able to install with just a pair of long-nosed pliers. Fixed my tailgate, and ready for it to break again!
