Is the EGR valve connected to the EGR cooler?

Is the EGR valve connected to the EGR cooler?

The flow of exhaust gases through the EGR cooler is controlled by the vehicle’s computer via the EGR valve. However, since the EGR cooler connects the exhaust and cooling systems of your engine, failures inside the cooler may lead to coolant loss, overheating, and engine damage, among other failures.

Is EGR cooler the same as EGR valve?

The EGR then flows through an EGR cooler provided with water from the engine jacket water. An EGR control valve located just before the mixer housing is responsible for controlling EGR rate. The EGR then passes to the intake manifold where it mixes with cooled charge air before being inducted into the engine.

How can I remove the EGR cooler plug?

Remove the connector plug from the ASV. The EGR Valve is secured to the inlet manifold by 3 5mm allen bolts which need to be removed. One is a little tricky to get to, and is longer than the other two, see pictures… The EGR valve and ASV should now come free and can be removed from the engine bay.

Is there an error code on the EGR valve?

No error codes logged in VCDS. I noticed a build of oil residue around the EGR valve and had suspected it for a while. So time to change it… This guide is for the BKD (TDI 140) engine but may also be applicable to the BMN (TDI 170 engine).

Where is the intake pipe on an EGR cooler?

Remove the T30 screw, to free the intake pipe giving better access to the EGR cooler. Below the turbo intake pipe you will see the inlet / exhaust manifold connecting pipe bolted to the side of the EGR cooler by 2 x 6mm allen bolts. Remove them to release the pipe from the cooler.

Why do I need an EGR cooler in my car?

The EGR cooler uses coolant from the engine cooling system to cool the exhaust gases before passing them to the inlet manifold. The main reason for EGR is to reduce combustion temperatures so that NOx (nitrogen oxided) emissions are reduced.

What happens when the EGR valve does not close?

This happens as soon as the vehicle’s central computer detects that the EGR valve is in an abnormal position. For example, if the EGR valve does not close all the way or open all the way when it is supposed to, then the computer will detect something is wrong and activate the Check Engine Light. 2) Poor Engine Performance

How much does it cost to replace an EGR valve?

Replacement Cost. The cost to replace an EGR valve is anywhere from $180 to $460. The parts costs alone will be somewhere between $139 and $349. The labor costs alone will be between $50 and $120, depending on the mechanic’s hourly rate. The good news is that it should not take more than one hour for the mechanic to perform this replacement job.

How to check the temperature of an EGR cooler?

• Measure the temperature at the EGR cooler outlet pipe (1). • The temperature of the cooler needs to be below 50˚C (1) before the probe of the digital video scope can be safely inserted to inspect the cooler.

What are the different types of EGR valves?

This helps to ensure the car maintains fuel efficiency and emits fewer emissions. There are two types of EGR valves; a vacuum-operated and an electronically controlled EGR valve. A vacuum-operated EGR valve is usually only found in older vehicles. It is a straightforward system which utilises a vacuum to switch the EGR valve from closed to open.
