yes its hydraulic oil. I would only use John Deere Hy-Guard oil. Its a good bet the trans/hyd oil has not been changed in a while. I would probably drain and change ot along with the hyd filter and clean the screen.

What kind of oil to use for JD 20 C?
As long as the oil says it meets specs for JD 20-c it is fine to use. The original oil was a 303 oil and there is a couple of companies selling it (so cheap that no one recommends it) but the Hy-guard and the 20C is much better.I buy mine in 55 barrels from an oil supplier.
