How can I tell if my speedometer is working?
If it works normally, then the speedometer module is at least receiving a speed input signal and the wiring and sensor & tone ring can be assumed to be good. Any slight dents, chips, etc., in either the exciter ring or VSS will create needle waver. Measure air gap between the VSS and exciter ring. It should be 0.38-0.51mm (0.015-0.020″).

The BCM and the PCI communications BUS are all involved as are several fuses. You can test that the speedometer gauge does move by holding in the Odometer trip button while switching the ignition ON….all the LEDs are lit up and the gauges move back and forth. This does not diagnose any problems…only checks that the gauges, lamps etc. do work.
Is there an odometer on a Dodge Ram 1500?
