Can you take apart a garbage disposal?

Virtually any disposal unit can be disassembled by anyone with do-it-yourself experience. Turn off the power for the disposal unit at the breaker box. The drain pipe will be connected to the rigid drain trap beneath the sink and will be located on the lower portion of the disposal unit.

Where is knock out plug?

The knockout plug is usually located inside the tube near the top of the garbage disposal. If you will insert the screwdriver inside the tube, you will feel something solid is blocking the drain opening. This is your knockout plug.

How do you remove a garbage disposal without replacing it?

Disconnect the Garbage Disposal Unplug the garbage disposal from the wall outlet. Place a bucket or other container under the drain trap to catch the water that drains from the pipes. Use pliers to loosen the slip nut at each end of the trap bend. Unthread the nuts and pull the trap straight down to remove it.

Do garbage disposals come with a power cord?

Cords are not sold with disposals and must be purchased separately. There are several kits available that contain all the parts required for installation, such as a grounded appliance power cord with plug, a cord clamp, and plastic wire connectors.
