Can you shift a transfer case while moving?
Can you shift a transfer case while moving?
Drivers will need to shift the transmission into neutral to disconnect torque to allow the transfer case to shift gears. It is sometimes helpful on Manual Shift Transfer cases to keep the vehicle moving below 3-5 mph while shifting into 4 ↓ to allow the gears to align teeth.
How does a 4 wheel drive transfer case work?
It is powered by the transmission output shaft and operates much like a secondary transmission. Most 4WD transfer cases have four modes of operation: two-high, neutral, four-low, and four-high. Because the driver only engages the 4WD when needed, this type of system is called “part-time” four-wheel drive.

Press the button while the light is on to go back into two-wheel drive at any speed. Reverse the F350 to free the front hubs if they won’t free. Unlike a manual transfer case, the 4×4 selector switch automatically locks the hubs when engaging four-wheel drive. It does not, however, disengage them automatically.
