Instead of removing the smog pump and replacing it with a dummy pulley, I plan to get a shorter belt and bypass the pump all together. Question is, anyone done this? Have any problems? What about removing the hose that comes off the pump? Will that have the same effect? Oh, I have an ’88 F150 with a 5.0 302. Just want some feedback.

Just an FYI for those looking to bypass the smog pump. You’ll need an 87.5″ belt. Make sure you route it the right way or you’ll pull your hair out trying different belts. Ok so I replaced my alternate r an my 3 v belts.

Wrong on the mpg and power, a properly working air system doesnt hurt anything, to actually get more power and mileage all the emission crap has to come off, which wont work on efi systems because it utilizes the emissions crap, the only real power\mileage boost is long headers and duals.

I usually remove a cat, the evap canister and reroute the tank vent into my cowl to keep water out, and remove the smog pump. 96 and newer vehicles you cant pull any of that stuff off unless you figure out how to make the computer happy. The problem with using a smaller belt on the air pump removal is the belt they make for it is just a tad to big.
