Why does my 1979 JCB backhoe not start?

The 1979 JCB Backhoe would not start after sitting idle for 4 weeks. I suspect I lost prime and air entered the system. When I spray starting fluid it starts for a instant. Please note I observed alittle diesel which had leaked from the top of the fuel injection pump where the throttle attaches.

I blead the system through the bleed screw on the fuel injector pump and then blead the fuel lines where they enter the fuel injectors on the bottom. I was able to get a small amount of fuel pulsating through the injectors.

I would loosen the injector lines and if you have a primer pump pump that while turning the engine over. Some injection pumps will have a small bleeder screw near the middle of the pump and that may need to be opened first to get fuel into the pump. Once fuel is pulsing out the lines the install and it should fire up.
