How often should a Cummins engine be worked on?
One of the biggest downsides I think, as a truck owner with one of these engines, is the fact that this engine likes to be worked on at least every 200-250k miles or so, to keep it healthy, especially if the EGR/DPF is in tact and operating.

What does it mean when your Cummins won’t start?
That kind of voltage drop would indicate: Weak battery OR bad cable connection OR bad starter. Start by having the batteries load tested, remove, clean and properly tighten all large connections between battery and starter. If the problem continues, suspect the starter. Thanks Brett, I’m thinking its the starter.

These are the steps (An EGR Tune-up) to perform every 200-250k miles on the CM871 ISX engine to prevent or stop some well known symptoms that will usually include one or more, but not all of the following symptoms… Surging or power increases above 1400-1500 RPM.
What to do if your Cummins won’t start?
If its a Freightliner Chassis, then look for a large wire running from the starter solenoid to a relay that frequently is located / mounted to the frame rail close to the starter. Why does my ISX truck won’t start?
I took the truck to my regular mechanic to have a full service done, and after they replaced all the fuel filters, it woudln’t start over their pit. (the primer pump was whirring away everytime i turned the key to the on position) Long story short, they diagnosed it as a bad high pressure pump.

What to do if your Cummins engine is not running?
The best way to rule it out is to check if the fuel tank is sufficiently filled, then make sure the pump is delivering fuel and run diagnostics on the actual pressure. Insufficient fuel supply: The engine needs a sufficient supply of fuel to run correctly.
What do I need to know about my Cummins Engine?
You’ll need to check for: Low fuel pressure: Fuel pressure is a frequently cited catalyst for engine starting and running issues. The best way to rule it out is to check if the fuel tank is sufficiently filled, then make sure the pump is delivering fuel and run diagnostics on the actual pressure.
What to do if your engine cranks but not starts?
Loosen the high pressure line at two injectors and visually check fuel delivery while cranking the engine. Replace injection pump, if fuel is not being delivered. Check the injection pump timing.

What causes a ram truck to not start?
First off, let’s get this out of the way, Ram trucks NEVER had the best luck with lift pumps. A lack of lift pump flow will not only cause a no start issue, but depending on how it failed, can cause other issues that we will discuss further into this post. The factory lift pumps on the 2003-2007 Cummins produce a dismal 10-11.5 PSI at idle.
