Why does my car sliding door not open?

Since this is a forum about cars and not family relationships, I’ll just say that the door won’t open easily now. If I just pull on the latch, it tries to open but it seems that something’s catching, and it reverses and closes back up. If I pull on the latch and guide the door back a few inches, it opens fine.
