Anyhow the problem i have now is the orange glow plug light on the dash does not come on when i turn the ignition on and as a result the van will not fire up! the engine stop light is on and is preventing the van from starting up, the engine turns over ok but will not start. Would the glowplug relay cause this fault and if so how can i test it?

OK, that’s a bit simplistic but frequently people breakdown with what they think is a battery problem, only for it to turn out to be the glow plugs that are at fault. The reason is that diesel engines use these heaters to help them start. In warmer weather they’re not as necessary.

After driving 100 miles, stopping, and then attempting to restart it after around 3 mins, this is when it wouldnt fire. Any info much appreciated. I might be wrong but a CDI should not need glowplugs in the British environment, IIRC they are mainly fitted for better emission control after the engine starts.

Have tested battery: no key in- 12v, key in and ignition on- 11.9v, key turning to crank position- 11.8v. All dash lights light up as normal when key on except for glow plug light which never comes on now. Why is my pre glow warning light not working?
If a new glow plug doesn’t remedy the problem, take a look at other parts of the circuit, mainly the timer. The timer’s job is to turn the plugs off once the correct temperature has been reached. A faulty timer may keep the plugs on for too long, wearing them out, or even not turn the plugs on at all.
