Why is my steering wheel vibrating at low speed?

The noise and vibration only occurs at low speed, and is worst when turning to the left. Through the steering wheel it feels and sounds like driving over a cattle grid, which is definitely not normal. Has anyone experienced anything like this before, or ideas on what it could be?

Why does my steering make noise when not in motion?

The noise and vibration was occurring, although not so badly, when the steering was turned whilst the van was not in motion. The mechanic said he had felt it when parking the van, but thought it may have been normal, but I’ve never heard it do that before in 8000 miles.
