Why is my battery light on after getting a new battery?

Why is my battery light on after getting a new battery?

There are usually two things that cause the battery light to come on after a battery replacement. The other is corrosion interfering with current flow, the result of changing out the battery without cleaning the terminal connectors and other connections along the starting and charging circuits.

How can I tell if my alternator or battery is OK?

As with most electrical issues, if you know the battery or alternator is OK (because you had it tested), then diagnosis comes down to tracing and testing for continuity from one portion of the circuit (s) involved to the next.

What causes a battery light to come on after an alternator is installed?

The most common is, again, a loose connection either with the control plug (aka “relay” plug-in), charging line connection, or the ground. The other is a blown fuse or defective connector or relay, which could have been broken or shorted when the alternator was installed or on the first start-up after its installation.

How can I test my car battery relay?

Assuming all fuses are fine, you can test relays by swapping them with others of the same part number (many vehicles will have two or three of the same relay running various components) or by testing the relay itself via continuity and resistance methods. When does the battery warning light come on?

May 25, 2016. The battery light or charging warning light, available on the dashboard of your car, indicates malfunctioning or poor charging of the battery. This light illuminates whenever the charging system does not charge the battery with a voltage above approximately 13.5 volts.

What to do if your battery light comes on again?

Tip: Try starting your car in a safe location, if the battery light comes on again, do not drive it. Shut off the engine and open the hood to see whether the serpentine belt, alternator or battery have any problems that can be identified visually. Tip: Always turn off the engine before inspecting the battery or other components.

Why does my battery light not come on when I start the car?

Excessive corrosion at the battery terminals can cause a low voltage condition which makes the starter turn slowly when trying to turn on your vehicle, but it will not illuminate the battery light if the alternator is charging properly once the car is started. Step 4: Secure the clamps on to the battery terminals.

How old should car batteries be before they need to be replaced?

I test batteries 3-7 years old and report the results, batteries over 7 years are recommended for replacement without testing because they can’t be proven reliable. I guess it depends whether the goal is to see how long a battery will last or to have a car that always starts.
