Where does the HPOP get its oil from?
In the 7.3L Power Stroke, oil is delivered to the HPOP from the engine’s oil pump located in the front cover. The HPOP then takes the oil received from the crankcase and pumps it back out under extremely high pressures (600-3,000 psi) through hoses that go to top of the right and left side cylinder heads.
How much oil does a HPOP reservoir take?
The 7.3 Powerstroke actually holds around 18 quarts of oil total—there are roughly 3 quarts of in the top-end. The oil rails and the HPOP reservoir, more on that below, hold an additional 3 quarts.

There is no reason to change it since it does cycles through the crankcase. There are those on here that feel that it needs to be changed so if you want to then do it. You will need a vacuum type pump to get the oil out since there is no way to drain it that is easily done.
