When do you need to replace a starting ring on a tractor?
When do you need to replace a starting ring on a tractor?
Starter ring gears are often in need of replacement when restoring a vintage tractor. Over time, the leading edge of the gears on the starting ring can become worn to the point that the starter motor cannot always engage effectively and thus it is unable to turn over the engine. This situation requires replacement of the starting ring gear.
When do you need to replace the ring gear?
On a manual transmission flywheel, if the teeth are bad, you don’t have to replace the whole flywheel. The ring gear can be replaced by itself for a lot less money.
Where do you put the starter ring on a Perkins tractor?
This relies on the tensile strength of the ring gear and the compressive strength of the flywheel. The photograph (below) shows a worn starter ring fitted to the flywheel of a Perkins engine in comparison to a new ring gear (placed on top for comparative purposes only).
How are ring gears attached to a tractor?
This situation requires replacement of the starting ring gear. Almost all tractor starter ring gears are attached to the flywheel by friction from an interference fit. This relies on the tensile strength of the ring gear and the compressive strength of the flywheel.
Where is the starter ring gear replacement located?
Starter ring gear replacement. This is the large gear that is on the outer edge of the clutch basket. When the start button is depressed, the starter shaft shoots out and spins while engaging with this large ring gear. This action turns the primary drive which turns the crank shaft of the motor allowing the motor to cycle & start.
How do you replace a starter ring on a Harley?
Then, the holes are drilled a little bit larger for the new retaining hardware. The new ring gear can then be bolted, securely onto the OEM Harley clutch basket. The kits typically have gears with less teeth (larger teeth allowing for more surface contact) for an even better, more definitive engagement over stock.
How does poor starter shaft to ring engagement affect a car?
This not only diminishes the life of the starter and the starter clutch, but it also allows for poor starter shaft to ring gear engagement. This poor engagement eventually wears away the surface area on the teeth of the gears. Teeth can even break off of the gears.
Why is my starter ring gear not working?
Another reason a starter ring gear will fail prematurely is when a failing starter clutch is not addressed. If you hear a “zing-zing” type of sound at start up, you have a bad starter clutch. Again, this condition makes for a poor engagement with the starter ring gear.
