Some 2015-2018 Silverado and Sierra models and 2019 Silverado 2500/3500 and Sierra 2500/3500 models equipped with the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine (RPOs LML, L5P) and dual fuel tanks (23.5 gallon/89 liter front tank and 40 gallon/151 liter rear tank) (RPO N2N) may have poor fuel transfer or the rear fuel tank may have collapsed. Where is the dual tank balance module located?

This module is located by the front (main) lift pump. Slightly toward the rear of vehicle along the frame rail. On top of this module is a fuel pump balance relay, it turns the rear pump on as needed to transfer fuel. At the module, you have a harness with 6 wires. Unplug it and check the following with a digital volt/ohm meter

Can a GM Truck have two fuel tanks?

Yes, each tank has its own filler. Oddly there is only a single fuel guage that seems to report the total fuel of the two tanks combined. For instance, if I were to fill one tank and leave the other empty, the guage would read about half full.

No, 12v will NOT always be there. It one of the very few thing that does NOT turn on and off based on controlling the ground. Based on the schematics it is controlled by the ECM though a relay. From what I understand as the front tank level drops, at some unknown level the transfer pump will come on moving fuel to the front tank.

What kind of truck has dual fuel tanks?

The work truck I’m issued is a 2015 3500 chassis cab with the dual tanks. I had the same problem twice with the fuel guage dropping to E and the truck only pulling from the front tank.
