Why is my DEF tank half full on my Ford truck?
I took the truck into the local Ford dealer and they told me that my DEF tank was dry. I questioned this because the indicator showed the previous day that it was half full. I also pointed out that the truck only had 3800 miles on it. Apparently running it dry caused an injector in the DEF system to fail.

DEF says it’s empty but it’s not.. Picked up my truck earlier this week after they replaced the fuel system… and note came up to fill def, but it was almost full before it went in the shop. I added a gallon yesterday but it didn’t reset the deal and I’m running out of miles.

DEF gauge and indicator light or LED flashing on the gauge default to “E” is an standard for an active SCR related fault. Not necessarily a defect with the DEF level gauge itself or that the DEF is low. Need to hook up, could be many things. pushbroom and spsauerland Thank this.

You cant fill the DEF with the truck running. You have to wait 25-30 minutes with the truck off before filling and restarting. Same thing happened to me yesterday. waited 30 minutes, put 2.5 gallons in, no issues at all right now. I topped my DEF tank (actually over full) before I left on a 4,400 mile tow.
