Is it normal to play your rear end axle?
Is it normal to play your rear end axle?
To be honest i consider your axle play normal, as well as the “clunk” the big thing to keep your ears out for is bearing failure since that was the weak sot in the GM `10 bolts from 88-98. Otherwise it will be pretty much trouble free.
How big should the end of the axle be?
If you don’t have a center pin carefully install both axles and just one of your dust caps. Push the axle on the side with no dustcap all the way in. The end of the axle should be 1/16” below the surface of the driveplate. (See photo 3) If it isn’t add or subtract washers until the end play is correct.
What causes an axial shaft to increase end play?
Another reason for increasing end play is axial shaft vibration. The common source is collar wobble where the leveling plates are constantly working to equalize the rotating high point of the collar. Equalizing thrust bearings are not designed to take high dynamic loads or swashplate loads.
What is the purpose of End play on a thrust bearing?
Changes in End Play The purpose of thrust bearing end play is to provide axial clearance between the thrust collar and the thrust bearing assemblies. The end play allows room for the formation of an oil film, misalignment, and thermal expansion of the bearing components.

Is there excessive axle end play on a Wilwood disk?
I am installing wilwood disks on the back of my car and have found there seems to be excessive axle end play. I measured .030″ from the end of the axle to the cross pin in the center of the diff. The C clips don’t seem to have excessive wear on them, nor does the pin itself.

How big is a GM 10 bolt axle?
Its just the standard 10 bolt axle so its nothing special. Thanks for your time and help all! I don’t know if there is a spec on these for axle end play, but some in/out movement (1/4 inch or so) is normal for a semi floating axle like the GM 10 bolt.
