Is it bad to shift to neutral while driving automatic?
Is it bad to shift to neutral while driving automatic?
Shifting an automatic to neutral while driving won’t blow up your engine. They fear that shifting their vehicle while in motion might somehow blow up or otherwise harm the engine. However, shifting an automatic into neutral while driving won’t make your engine explode.
How does the electronic control transmission ( ECT ) work?
The engine ECU monitors coolant temperature and sends a signal to terminal OD1 of the ECT ECU. The ECU prevents the transmission from upshifting into overdrive and lock-up until the coolant has reached a predetermined temperature. This temperature will vary from 122’F to 162’F depending on the transmission and vehicle model.
How does the neutral start switch work on a car?
In addition to sensing gear positions, the neutral switch prevents the starter from cranking the engine unless it is in the park or neutral position. In the park and neutral position, continuity is established between terminals “B” and “NB” of the neutral start switch illustrated below. Throttle Position Sensor
How does the throttle position sensor work in an ECT?
The throttle position sensor takes the place of throttle pressure in a fully hydraulic control transmission. By relaying the throttle position, it gives the ECU an indication of engine load to control the shifting and lock-up timing of the transmission. There are two types of throttle sensors associated with ECT transmissions.
How are the contact points in an ECT laid out?
Three movable contact points rotate with the throttle valve, causing contacts L1, L2, L3 and IDL to make and break the circuit with contact E (ground). The grid which the contact points slide across is laid out in such a way as to provide signals to the ECT ECU depicted in the chart below.
Can a car go FWD in reverse and neutral?
It goes fwd in both reverse and neutral. It goes into park just fine. The fluid is full and not burnt. It will drive forward when in reverse and in neutral. I turned the engine off and checked neutral, it was not in gear but tried to go forward as soon as I started the engine. I have never seen this! Rod_Knox July 6, 2016, 2:56am #2
What happens if you hit the neutral switch?
This component is the neutral safety switch. For instance, if you inadvertently set the gear to Drive and then try to start the engine, the neutral safety switch will prevent the engine from starting. That way, the vehicle will not roll forward right afterward.
Why does my truck go into park with the neutral switch on?
With the neutral safety switch on the column it certainly is possible that the problem is in the linkage to the transmission. Maybe I read too much into the OP’s statement that he checked neutral and it goes into park just fine. Maybe the OP will try to push the truck with the lever at Park and post back. When do you Set Your Car to neutral?
When you go to start your engine, the gear must be set to Neutral or Park. Most people will already have their gear set to Park from when they parked their car before and that is fine.
