Doing business at an Iowa DOT driver’s license service center can now be accomplished by appointment. We will no longer accept walk-in customers. A pilot project of the appointment-only model began March 16 as a way to accomplish social distancing in response to the pandemic.
How do I transfer car title in Iowa?

You can receive a replacement set of plates at your County Treasurer’s Office. You will need to bring with you your current registration and your remaining plate that is on your vehicle and pay the applicable fees. The cost for the replacement set of plates will be $5.00.

To schedule an appointment at a DMV customer service center, select a “service type” and then select which office you’d like to visit from the menu to the right. On the next page, you’ll be prompted to select a specific service and make an appointment for a specific date and time.

The application forms are available online, or you can pick one up from the DMV office. They can be submitted electronically, in person or through the mail. Make sure you provide the necessary fees and documentation in order to receive your title.
When can I renew my drivers license?
You can renew up to 1 year before and 2 years after your license expires. Renewing your license anytime within this period will not affect the expiration date of your new driver license or the fees. If your license is expired for 2 years or more, you must apply for an original license.
How much do new license plates cost in Iowa?
Fee for a numbered regular plate with the emblem is $35 with a $10 renewal fee that is in addition to the regular annual registration fee. Fee for a personalized plate with the emblem is $60 with a $15 renewal fee that is in addition to the regular annual registration fee.
How long can you drive with expired tags in Iowa?
A person shall not be considered to be driving a motor vehicle with an expired registration for a period of one month following the expiration date of the vehicle registration. The one-month period shall be the same as the period defined in section 321.134, subsection 1.
