Most diesel engines are stopped by turning off the fuel flow. They don’t have an ignition system like gasoline engines do. Once started, diesel engines only need electricity for the fuel pump, the computers (fuel management system) and any non-mechanical fuel metering devices.

The most common reason for a diesel to stop running mid-stream like that is b/c of lack of fuel. So your idea to replace the lower fuel pump and fuel filter was a good bet. A faulty injection pump could be the reason it is still doing it though.
