How do you remove a broken bolt with a torch?

How do you remove a broken bolt with a torch?

Turn on your torch and aim the flame directly at the bolt head. Move the flame in a circle around the bolt for 30 seconds. Use a socket wrench to rock the bolt back and forth until it loosens enough to be removed. The bolt is stubborn, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Why does a car wheel bolt round off?

The reason for this is the rounded corners apply force not to the points of the hexagon on the bolt, but a few mm away from the point, where the bolt head is stronger. A straight socket applies force directly on the pointy bits of the bolt head, encouraging them to round off

What to do if your car has a stuck wheel bolt?

There is some debate as to whether this car is fitted with nuts or bolts – if it’s a nut, heat could be applied to the socket/extension bar while a turning force is applied (encourages the socket to establish thermal conductive contact with the nut) thus keeping the flame away from the alloy.

How are rear alignment bolts seized in bushing?

We took it to our mechanic and they noted both rear alignment bolts are seized in the bushing. They worked on the left rear wheel: heat, penetrating oil, double-nut + impact tool, etc. It remained seized. They told us to repair it, they’d have to cut off the bolts, get new bushings, etc etc. Big bucks!

Why did my lug nut break on my car?

The EHT staff recently broke a lug bolt during a routine tire-rotation job. We suspect the nut and bolt had been cross-threaded by a careless mechanic, because the bolt easily twisted in half when using a lug wrench without exerting any extra torque.

What can cause a wheel to fall off / hub to break?

Assuming that you where not stationary at the time of the incident I suspect some kind of under-body damage, perhaps also damage on suspension parts, engine (oil sump) or frame. A wheel bearing failure can, indeed, cause the wheel to fall off. Mine did last week.

How do you replace a broken lug nut stud?

Use your fingers to pull the broken bolt from the rear of the hub flange. The replacement bolt was a stock part from a local auto parts supplier. To install the new bolt into the bolt hole, the wheel must be turned to align the hole with a slot on the rear of the hub flange, which provides the clearance to thread it through.
