How do you install a new water pump pulley?

Step 1: Install the new pulley onto the water pump shaft. Screw in the mounting bolts and hand tighten them. Then torque the bolts to the recommended specifications that should have come with the pulley. If you do not have any specs, you can torque the bolts to 20 foot pounds and then an additional 1/8 turn.

Tighten the removal tool slowly. Some removal tools require a ratchet drive socket to turn the screw, while others can be turned by hand. As the removal tool’s screw is rotated, it extends toward the shaft of the pump rotor, while its side clips undergo an opposite force pulling the pulley from the rotor.

Mount the new gasket or seal in place on the water pump. Install the water pump and gasket. Then use a torque wrench to tighten the water pump mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specification.
