The emergency braking is done with a breakaway system that uses a battery to energize your brake magnets. The only manual brake engagement is on the parking brake which will keep your trailer wheels from moving when parked under the correct cable tension.

How does the trailer brake module work on a Ford PowerStroke?
Every 4 seconds (when not braking) the TBC module sends a voltage pulse to pin 3 of the 7-pin trailer tow connector to determine whether or not a trailer is connected. DTC C2806 (Trailer Brake Output Circuit Short to Vbatt) – sets when the TBC module detects that the battery voltage is greater than 9 volts while not braking.

What should the voltage be on a trailer brake controller?
The voltage at the brake magnets when the vehicle is sitting still and the brake pedal is pressed will only read a small amount with the Ford integrated brake controller on your truck. If you are using the manual slide to activate the trailer brakes you should get somewhere between 12 and 13 volts with the controller set to the maximum setting.
