Can a power liftgate be opened and closed manually?
Neither the salesman while at the dealer nor myself could get the rear hatch to open or close manually. It takes too much force to manually attempt to close it… to the point of it might breaking. Maybe there is a way via the handbook, but I have not looked it up yet. I have taken delivery of my 2015 Outback Premium.

I went and looked at the new Outback last week and asked the salesman about manually closing the liftgate and he said that people were manually closing the automatic liftgate on the 2014/2015 Forester and it was causing problems by confusing software on vehicle.

Click to expand… As with any vehicle with a power tailgate, you can still open it manually if you like. It just takes more effort as described by tab25 above. I have closed it manually and it’s really stiff. Not sure how to test opening it manually because as soon as you press the button it starts lifting itself.

What to do if your liftgate won’t open?
The outside button and inside rear button beep when pressed, unlatch the liftgate, but do not open it. The dash button and key fob buttons do open and close the liftgate. I tried the reset procedure as specified in the manual and disconnected the battery for 20 seconds.
