Are Mercedes Benz truck engines good?
Parts are terrible expensive, but I think overall they are as reliable and efficient as the other big three truck engines. My father in law had one for a couple years, never did have any major problems with it. If they were as terrible as everybody says there wouldn’t be any out there on the road.

The most common problem I see with the MBE 4000 are coolant leaks, and fuel leaks. Coolant usually leaks on the coolant rail, it is a metal rail that connects all 6 cylinder heads together, it is all so called the Deareation line. They usually crack, or the crush washers leak.

No intake air preheater is installed, and it is too cold to start without one. Install an intake air preheater. The intake air preheater is malfunctioning. Check the intake air preheater, and replace it, if necessary. The camshaft TDC sensor and/or the crank angle position sensor are out of adjustment.

What causes corrosion on a Mercedes MBE 4000?
When head is removed check its surface and cyl. block surface for corrosion. Coolant leaking there causes corrosion, but usually damaged surface is on cyl head, not on block. If yoi see it – resurface cyl. head, but do not forget to pull out valves and injector (LOL!!!).
