Grab the gas-cap handle. Twist it anti-clockwise to open it. Now, if the gas cap is missing altogether, all you need to do is install a new one (coming to that in a bit). But if the cap is there, check closely for crack, tear or chips. If you find any damage, the cap needs to be replaced.
