It probably is not a good idea to drive it like that, but if you do I recommend NOT driving it in Auto, but put in 4WD. In Auto there are clutches that engage the front driveshaft when the rear wheels slip. Or when the rear is shot and not pushing the truck. Instead of being fully engaged it has to allow some slip, and that will burn the clutches.

GM push-button 4wd is goofy. sometimes they need reset. but, if that doesn’t work, i’d throw a switch at it if i were you. i know exactly what it is check your solenoid on your front axle for a loose or shorted connection!! been there done that!
