Why is my power steering not working at idle?

Why is my power steering not working at idle?

Cause: The power steering pump is not providing sufficient pressure to operate the power steering rack/box correctly at engine idle revs. As these components wear more fluid leaks passed reducing the efficiency of the pump. Increasing the speed the vanes or cylinders are rotating compensates for the loss of efficiency.

Why does power steering turn one way but hard to turn the other way?

Power steering turns one way but hard to turn the other way. Gearbox or power steering pump problem? Can easily change both but need to be certain. I think its the gear box.

Where does power steering fluid go in a 1500?

The 1500has seperate brake fluid and seperate power steering fluid. reservoir ps fluid goes to gear box. brake fluid lines go to brakes. 2500 have power boost. A hydro booster runs off the power steering fluid system. So a hose goes from the ps cooler or gear box and to the booster, then a return line runs from the booster back to the ps pump.

What to do if your steering wheel is disconnected?

Tie your steering wheel down so it can’t move very much while the shaft is disconnected. A couple of bungees or tie downs around the spokes and the brake pedal should do it. You will want it to go back on exactly in the same rotation position that it was in when it was disconnected.

At idle and turning the wheel causes lots of strain, and if there is any slack in the belt, it will slip causing tough turning. The belt needs to be tight. If you recently replaced the belt, keep in mind that most belts stretch a bit after they wear and need to be retightened.
