Why is my Dodge Durango running so hot?
A couple of months later, the Durango started running warm and leaking coolant from the front of the vehicle. I found a small leak in the radiator. I went to the auto part store and bought some sealant for the leak and poured it in. It stopped the leak and the vehicle continued to run great for the next year and a half.
What is going on with the 2001 Dodge Durango?
What is going on with the 2001 dodge durango? The cooling problem is an issue. I have a 2004 Durango (4.7L V8) with the same/similar overheating problem. I figured it was the fan clutch (nope) because when I rev the engine in idle, the temp comes down.
What’s the normal operating temp on a Dodge Durango?
I have a 2001 Dodge Durango SLT Plus and Dakota Quad Cab SLT both with 4.7L and two wheel drive. My Durango has had several overheating problems and my Dakota has always ran in the normal operating range. Since there are no numbers to indicate operating temp on the gauge, normal operating temp on my Dakota is about a 1/3 from the left side.
What causes a Dodge Durango to overheat?

What does it mean when your car is idling but not running?
When the engine is running but the vehicle is not moving, this means the engine is idling. During this time, the number of revolutions per minute (RPM) inside the engine will change.
What happens if you have a bad idle control valve?
Since the idle air control valve is supposed to manage the idle speed of the engine, a bad valve will certainly throw that out of whack. It will cause the idle speed to randomly fluctuate to different speeds rather than stay at one constant speed. The idle speed may be too high at one moment and then too low at other moments.
Why is my Durango fan not working properly?
I had a very similar problem with my Durango, recently. It is very likely that the electric fan is defective or intermittent unless you are losing coolant and/or oil without leaking, then you may want to have your coolant tested for emissions. If it contains emission you may have an internal crack in your block or a damaged head gasket.

Why is my car still overheating after replacing the water pump?
As for the vehicle still overheating, if all of the parts you have replaced are working fine, then you may have an air flow issue through the radiator. If this was the case, the vehicle would still cool at higher speeds and just not around town.
Is the coolant still leaking from cylinder 8?
Truck is severely overheating, losing a lot of coolant with NO external leak (even under pressure), cylinder 8 is still misfiring (despite changed plugs), there is a coolant smell coming from the vents inside cabin but no window fogging or wet floors. Coolant seems clean of oil and oil looks free of coolant.
Why does my Dodge Durango keep overheating?
I can drive for about 60 minutes in the city then the engine begins to heat up then quickly goes to overheat. I have had the engine fan clutch replaced, thermostat replaced, sensor replaced, waterpump replaced, still happening.

What kind of coolant does a Dodge Durango use?
The Durango has the standard green coolant while the Dakota has red coolant. The towing package comes with a two core radiator and transmission cooler. Without the towing package you get a single core radiator and no transmission cooler. The first time the Durango overheated, I was going up the grapevine on a warm day (about 85-90 degrees).

What causes excessive pressure in the coolant system?
With a cracked or loose return line, air will be sucked back into the rad as the engine cools. Same thing happens if the rad cap leaks air as it cools. The head work is ok. Repeated tests show no gases in coolant system. System was pressure checked for 3 hours with res line plugged at the reservoir.
What happens when your coolant system is full?
You may have air in the system. When the engine is cold make sure the rad is topped off and the res level is at least mid-way between low and full. When the engine cools, if the system is full when hot, the res level will decrease and usually increase when hot. All this is assuming the head work stopped that problem.
What causes the coolant to return to the reservoir?
Repeat test of combustion gases in coolant system came back negative. I think your response of the reservoir line having a crack or something that allows the coolant to return to the radiator is a good option to pursue. Coolant flows to the reservoir hot, but does not reverse flow. Same level cold as when hot.
Is the truck in good condition or overheating?
The vehicle currently has 216xxx KM and is for the most part in good condition. Truck is severely overheating, losing a lot of coolant with NO external leak (even under pressure), cylinder 8 is still misfiring (despite changed plugs), there is a coolant smell coming from the vents inside cabin but no wondow fogging or wet floors.

Can you get a new engine in a Durango?
Going to the hemi requires upgrading all of the little items for smog such as vapor canister and sensors. It can be done, but is prohibitively expensive. You can get the proper engine in either rebuilt condition or much cheaper out of a wrecked Durango, both come with a guarantee but the new engine carries the best.
What to do if your car gauge is overheating?
Take the pressure cap off the radiator and run the engine until the thermostat opens (coolant starts flowing through the radiator and the upper hose gets hot.) Turn the engine off and let it cool. Add more coolant (50% antifreeze + water) to bring the level back up to normal.
What kind of coolant do I need for my Dodge Durango?
A good synthetic gear oil like Mobil 1, Redline, etc for the diffs, and Valvoline, Castrol, or other quality brand of ATF+4 for the trans and T case. Do you know how old the plugs are? They are speced for a 30K interval. You can run them 50K, but I wouldn’t go beyond that.

At this point, the blower motor blows air across the it and the newly heated air blows on to the driver and passengers. If the heater has stopped working in your Durango, this process has failed in one way or another.
What happens if a heater core goes bad?
The heater core itself can go bad. Over time, they are known to clog and fail. If you have a heater core that clogged, it’s not going to be able to pass coolant through. Without the warm coolant going through it, there can be no heat. A bad heater core can also leak, so watch out for that.
