If your car begins to overheat when idling, but the temperature gauge moves back down once you get going, it’s most likely due to a broken radiator fan. However, when your car is sitting still, the radiator fan should kick in, keeping the air moving over the radiator to help cool down the coolant.

Coolant temp sensors don’t measure air temp. If there was no coolant in your engine the gauge will read cool when acualy the engine will be turning itself in to a molten pile of steel. Sounds to me like your head gasket blew out, or wore you cracked a head. There is a easy way to tell.

Is there coolant coming out of my Jeep?
I bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 45k mile (yes, that’s right) three days ago. Had them change the timing belt at the dealer before I took it. Have driven it 200 miles. Pulled in the driveway just now and fluid (I think it is coolant) pouring out from under the front.
