Usually when it won’t show the correct gear you can rock the shifter forward and backward a bit and the right gear will come up… just some slop in there. ususally it shows the right gear going into low or high, but sometimes won’t show nuetral when coming out of gear, or sometimes sitll shows reverse when coming out of reverse.

Why does the shift indicator show L in high?

Everyting mechanically with the shifter was working (shifting the trans) but the wrong signal was going to the dash, and I would assume to whatever controls the diff engagement. Half way through Saturday it started to display “L” in low, and in high, so he at least had 4wd. Has anybody run accross this before?

I’m posting this for a friend that I was wheeling with last weekend. He has an 08 XP that was not showing the correct gear selection on the dash display. It was showing “N” when the trans is in neutral, and when the trans is in low. Because of that, he had no four wheel drive engagement.

Merely the incorrect gear indicator lighting up, showing the car is in reverse when it is actually in drive. Anything other than or in addition to possible broken/worn trans and/or motor mounts that might cause the gear indicator to malfunction? There’s a single bulb mounted on a bracket connected to the shift lever.
