That electrician did not do a good job because this means that the ground was open all this time. We just took over the lease, so who knows how many years it has been that way. On a side note, this 15a circuit I found to install the light on needs to be redone too.

You need a ground. Neutrals aren’t always in a switch box (depends on how the wires are ran). You might be able to run a 14/2 from the switch box to the nearest receptacle box and splice the ground connection in the receptacle to your switch. Cap off the white an black in that 14/2.
