Some have found it ca come from the grommet where the hatch wiring goes into the body. Others have seen it from the grommet for the outboard taillight wiring. Wish the Escape had a drain in the well like many older cars did. Was poking around my FE today and found standing water about 1/8” deep in my spare tire well.

Can a tire plug leak in deep water?
If the rubber flashing is twisted or trash has accumulated to block the water’s path it can run over into the trunk. Also, there is a rubber plug at the bottom of the spare tire well that can leak water in from under the car when stopped in deep water or when driving in high water.
