Where is the kickdown switch on a TH400?
Where is the kickdown switch on a TH400?
Instead of a linkage or cable, the TH400 uses an electrical switch that is most often mounted on the carburetor. The 12-volt connection is a single spade connector just above the oil pan rail on the driver’s side about halfway back–at least that’s where it is on my TH400.
How do I test a TH400 kickdown switch?
The kick down switch at the gas pedal can be tested with a multimeter(set on ohms). The solenoid in the pan can be tested by applying 12 volts to the vertical connection at the transmission and listening for a click emanating from the pan.
How much vacuum does a TH400 need?
Registered. Coan told me 13-14 at idle inches of vacuum is needed for a modulator to work properly.
Where are the TH400 kick down switches located?
All of the TH400 kickdown switches I have seen (and I may have one somewhere) mount under the dash on the accel. pedal/firewall. One wire (12v+) to the spade on the driver side of the trans. Let me dig around in the attic and see if I can find it.
What’s the downshift switch on a Caprice TH400?
I want to rehook up the downshift switch, or passing gear switch, on the Caprice’s TH400. It’s basically a push button switch that is activated by the carb linkage opening to full throttle. There are two wires that connect to the trans.
Can a TH400 be swapped into a different vehicle?
Often when a TH400 is swapped into a different vehicle, this downshift electrical switch is overlooked. Besides the loss of any kind of downshift function, the real danger is that under WOT the transmission has not been commanded to increase line pressure.

Can a TH400 down shift without a kickdown?
That’s funny…right before I found your thread I was wondering IF a TH400 would/should down-shift without the kickdown switch. Mine does not downshift unless the mph is low enough to force it. Also, it will UP-shift at about 3500 even though you have the pedal to the floor.

Where does the power go on the downshift switch?
The switch needs power from the fuse block (switched power, only on when the ignition switch is on). The other side of the switch goes to the orange wire on the trans. The last picture I posted shows the tab you bolt onto the throttle arm, that rubs against the switch plunger.
