When does a Ford Focus sputter and shake?
When does a Ford Focus sputter and shake?
If I drive the car slow and shift around 2000k rpms the car is fine. However, If I press the gas half way or more the car starts to sputter and shake and sometimes it will make a popping noise. It typically happens if the gas is pressed halfway or more over 3000k rpms.
Why is my car sputtering after new spark plugs?
It is possible for there to be a vacuum leak, a faulty oxygen sensor, a catalytic converter that is starting to show signs of failure, or even a possible problem in the fuel system. It will be necessary to do some further diagnostics to determine which system is causing the problem, and then figure out which part in that system is the root cause.
How does the VCT work on a Ford Focus?
The PCM monitors inputs from 5 different sensors to determine optimum cam position (timing). The VCT drive unit is controlled by oil pressure moving a piston in the valve body, as directed the the PCM. VCT piston freezes in retarded position; decreased performance.

When to replace spark plugs and coil packs?
This way the misfire moves to other cylinder then you know it was plug and replace it. If misfire still on number one then check for spark and injector pulse and replace injector or coil as needed. The statements expressed above are only for informational purposes and should be independently verified.
What should I do if my spark plug is misfiring?
I suggest first removing and checking the spark plug and swap in a new one or swap with cylinder next to it. This way the misfire moves to other cylinder then you know it was plug and replace it. What causes the VCT to stall at low RPMs?
VCT piston freezes in retarded position; decreased performance. VCT piston freezes in advanced position; rough and stalling at low rpm’s. VCT solenoid loses power; lack of engine power. VCT control unit shorts to ground; cam timing will hold in fully advanced position, rough and stalling at low rpm’s.
Is the Focus ST a MAF or T-MAP sensor?
I think you mean MAP sensor, the Focus ST is speed density and doesn’t use a MAF sensor despite the error in the factory service manual calling the T-MAP (temperature-manifold absolute pressure sensor) a MAF since the base car uses a MAF. But otherwise good job on successfully repairing the car yourself. Thanks for sharing this.
