What to do if your Mustang radiator is overheating?
What to do if your Mustang radiator is overheating?
Inspect the water pump and look for corroded vanes that aren’t moving water efficiently. Power-flush the block by removing the drain plugs at the right front and left rear. Note that there is active debate on Mustang forums on whether the four-core radiator actually cools better.
Why is my Ford Mustang running so hot?
The answer here depends on how the car is running hot. If it’s hot even while cruising down the highway, it’s a water-flow issue. If it’s cool while in motion and only hot while idling in traffic, it’s an airflow issue.
What’s the average temperature for a 1967 Mustang?
Hagerty Drivers Club member Paul V. Romero writes: My ’67 Mustang with its original 289 V-8 runs hotter than normal during the summer months. I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where it doesn’t get much above 90 degrees.
How big of a fan should I use to cool my Mustang?
Be aware that the electrical draw from a big cooling fan is substantial and can stress an old alternator. The rule of thumb is one amp per 100 cfm of airflow, so a 2000 cfm fan can draw 20 amps. At a minimum, make sure the belt isn’t glazed.

Why did my Ford 289 overheat after replacing the radiator?
The replacement radiator, and then the 3 row desert radiator never cooled the car like my original that was 30 years old. It could be a simple as a bad radiator cap. BTW, didn’t you invent the lever and some ideas about displacement? I read a story where an engine overheated and they couldn’t find a problem with the cooling system.
What kind of thermostat does a 289 Mustang have?
I have a 1967 Ford Mustang convertible with a 289 engine, and a 4 barrel carb, 160 degree thermostat. This car overheats no matter what i do!. i have a new 6 bladed fan in in it, the radiator i think is only 2 core, but the over heating does not occure when im idle, i can be going down a road at 65 and it will not cool down. what do i do?

Why is my fox body Mustang cooling system not working?
Another issue with old coolant is that it develops an electrical charge over time. This charge causes electrolysis which is the #1 cause of cooling system corrosion and heater core failure. Don’t forget to add coolant additive such as Royal Purple Purple Ice when refilling your cooling system.
Can a failed radiator fan cause a car to overheat?
The most common symptom of a failed radiator fan is that the car is overheating on idle or at lower speeds because at higher speeds the car doesn’t need the use of the radiator fan. You should check if the radiator fan is spinning on full power when the thermostat is fully opened and the car engine is hot or while it’s overheating.
What should I do if I have a cooling problem on my Mustang?
When it comes to maintenance on your factory cooling fan, make sure the shroud is in place and fully intact. Inspect all the fan blades for cracks and damage. Do not forget to check the fan clutch for signs of leaking. Any signs of residue on the fan clutch means it needs to be replaced. The fan and fan clutch setup does have it’s limitations.

What kind of radiator hose do I need for my Mustang?
Our SVE radiator hose kits are a great way to replace and upgrade your engine cooling components. Offered in black and blue finishes, these kits feature high quality silicone hoses that work great for factory or aftermarket radiators.
What causes a radiator hose Cap to collapse?
Engine overheating is not necessarily a cause or effect of a collapsed hose. The most common cause for radiator hose collapse is a vacuum issue caused by a faulty radiator cap. Caps are rated around 14–16 psi.
Why are there two hoses in a radiator?
Radiator hoses are a vital part of the cooling system that carry hot coolant from the engine through the radiator and circulate it back — cooler — to the engine again. There are two hoses, the upper and lower, and they’re thick and sturdy enough to handle both high pressures and immense heat.
Why is my Mustang hot while idling in traffic?
If it’s cool while in motion and only hot while idling in traffic, it’s an airflow issue. For the water-flow issue, verify that the thermostat is opening by feeling the lower radiator hose and making sure it’s hot when the vehicle is warmed up.
