Unfortunately the Chevy 454 was the right engine at the wrong time. Uncle Sam started to tighten down on emission controls in 1971 which affected a lot of the power of the 454. Another big blow for the 454 was the gas crisis of 1973 which pretty much sealed the fate for the motor during this period.

Looking from here, if your overheating is happening in traffic it may be caused by the vacuum advance unit being sourced to ported vacuum. It should be sourced to manifold vacuum. Reason being, it takes time to burn the lean idle mixture and GM engines require quite a bit of additional advance at idle.

It seems to be running a bit hot….anywhere from 195° to 200°. I think that is a little to high. What do you guys think? It has a 180° t-stat and a 3 row BBC radiotor…brand new. What can i do to cool it down?
