Human herpesvirus 4, or HHV-4, is an infectious virus that’s often called the Epstein-Barr virus. HHV-4 is most commonly associated with infectious mononucleosis, or mono—a common virus that most people get infected with at childhood, but whose symptoms mostly affect young people and adults.

How do you get herpes virus 4?

EBV is usually passed from person to person through infected saliva. This is commonly through kissing or sharing utensils, beverages, toothbrushes, or food. It may also be possible to transmit EBV through other bodily fluids. Most of the time, EBV is spread from people that are asymptomatic.

Is herpes 4 an STD?

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that any sexually active person can get. Most people with the virus don’t have symptoms. Even without signs of the disease, herpes can still be spread to sex partners.

Is there a cure 4 herpes?

There is no cure for herpes. Antiviral medications can, however, prevent or shorten outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication. In addition, daily suppressive therapy (i.e. daily use of antiviral medication) for herpes can reduce the likelihood of transmission to partners.

Technically, yes, mono can be considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI). But that’s not to say that all cases of mono are STIs. Mono, or infectious mononucleosis as you might hear your doctor call it, is a contagious disease caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV is a member of the herpesvirus family.

When is herpes most contagious?

While an outbreak isn’t necessary for herpes transmission, herpes is most contagious about 3 days before an outbreak; this usually coincides with an itching or burning sensation or pain in the area where the outbreak will occur.

Why is herpes not curable?

Herpes is challenging to cure because of the nature of the virus. The HSV infection can hide away in a person’s nerve cells for months or years before reappearing and reactivating the infection.
