The valve cover gasket is an important part of your car’s fuel system that goes over the top portion of the engine cylinder head. This gasket prevents any oil or fuel from leaking out of the engine as it travels around the camshafts, rockers, and valves. The cover gasket is also in charge of sealing off numerous spark plug ports to keep them protected and prevent spark plug fluid leaks.

What are torque specifications?

Torque specifications are for dry threads only. The fastener threads should be free of oil, dirt, grit, corrosion, etc. The hardware should turn freely without binding when tightened by hand. It is important NOT to lubricate hardware threads or seats. The friction at which torque is measured against should come from the hardware seats.

Why is there no torque on VC bolts?

There is no torque on VC bolts, you simply run them in till they hit solid and stop. They are shoulder bolts, tightening them tighter does nothing but break them. That’s why the ‘torque’ number is so low.

What happens when you drill a hole for a valve cover?

Sometimes with the small bolts like that you end up with a “crescent” left in the hole, because the bit NEVER seems to drill a centered hole. Picks & pliers will remove the residue, then you need to tap the hole to clean up the threads. Worst case scenario, the hole gets totally “buggered”, so you just drill it out larger for a Helicoil….

How many steps do you need to tighten a valve cover?

Just a suggestion but you should do this as you do every multi-bolt tightening, take them down in steps. finger tight first, 30 inch pounds second and then final tension. This will always set a gasket so it will seal the best. The more intensive to replace the gasket the more steps I take. A head gasket gets at least 5 steps. YMMMV:thumbsup:

What happens when the torque is too much?

Too much tension on the bolt will cause the bolt to be stretched beyond the point of yield. The bolt will be permanently stretched. The bolt will loosen the grip on the parts that are being fastened. If the bolt is tightened again, the bolt will break. Do not reuse bolts that have been permanently stretched.

Why do I need to fix my valve cover gasket?

Even though they can be slower leaks, fixing a valve cover gasket leak quickly is important for a few reasons. First, the oil can leak onto the exhaust manifold causing fumes and the possibility of a fire. Also, a slow leak can still deplete your engine oil quickly, causing premature wear or even catastrophic damage to your engine.
