Is the EGR valve on my Chevy Venture defective?

Our 2000 Chevy Venture, with a 3400 SFI engine (3.4L) had a defective EGR valve, throwing fault codes of P0401, P0403, P0404, P0405, P1404. Symptoms included a Service Engine Soon light, poor gas mileage, rough idle, lack of power on acceleration.

My 2004 3.4L has a starting issue when the engine is warm. It starts fine when the engine is cold. I can barely step on the gas pedal when it is warm and it will start right up. I have cleaned around the throttle body butterfly and this did no help.

Install the new EGR valve. Thread the bolts through the EGR and gasket onto the mount with your hands first. Then use a socket wrench with a swivel extension to tighten the mounting bolts when you seat the EGR valve in the engine. When purchasing a new valve, see if it comes with a new gasket. You will have to purchase one if it doesn’t.

Can you clean an EGR valve without removing it?

If you cannot get direct access to the turbo an alternative would be to spray (less effective) into the air duct in the direction of the turbo but please remember to remove the MAF (mass airflow)/air intake sensor first as the cleaner may damage it. Where is the EGR valve on a Honda Accord?

The EGR is usually located on either the top or backside of the engine. Consult your owner’s manual if you need help finding it. Disconnect the vacuum line. Twist and pull each line until they slide off the EGR valve. Each line connects with a specific port. Label each one so that you can easily reconnect them. Disconnect the electrical cable.
