The UK’s biggest and best open water swim event, the John West Great North Swim, returns to the beautiful setting of Brockhole on Windermere for a fantastic, family-friendly open water swimming adventure. With distances ranging from 250 metres right up to a 10k there are options for all levels and abilities.
How much is it to get into brockhole?
There is no entry fee at Brockholes but we do operate car parking charges. The income generated by car parking charges is really important to Brockholes Nature Reserve.

dogs are very welcome at Brockhole. There is plenty of space for them to enjoy the grounds, although they must be kept on a lead at all times. Dogs are not allowed in the café but they are allowed on the café terrace. Have a great time!

Accommodation: Entrance porch in to a panelled hallway. The panelled sitting room (TV) is off to one side of the hall, with the dining room opposite – imagine being able to dine at one of Beatrix Potter’s own tables in the room which was once Beatrix’s own tea shop! Both rooms have open fires and feature oak floors.

Who was a frequent visitor to Brockhole Lake?
Beatrix Potter was a frequent visitor to Brockhole, being a cousin of William Gaddum’s wife. Following Gaddum’s death in 1946 the house was used as a convalescent home, until it was bought in 1966 by the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNA), who opened up the visitor centre here in 1969. Since then the centre has grown in popularity.

Brockhole on Windermere is run by the Lake District National Park as our visitor centre. Every penny made here goes back to supporting our work taking care of the National Park.

If your children need a little motivation to go on a walk then this walk is a great choice. Starting near the village of Troutbeck, the walk takes you along a farm track down to Brockhole, the visitor centre for the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA), where there is a huge adventure playground that was rebuilt in 2018.
