How often should I change my rear axle fluid?
This interval is definitely not adequate, because we overhaul lots of F-150 rear axles after they have failed between 150,000 and 200,000 km; well before their first recommended fluid change. We have been suggesting a fluid service every 100,000 km instead, which seems to be working quite well for our customers.
How much lube does a rear differential hold?
Back in 1996, maximum towing capacity was 10,500 lbs. using a rear differential that held 3.75 quarts of gear lube. The 2019 model offers a 15,000-lb. towing capacity using a rear differential that holds 3.5 quarts of fluid.
Do you need to change front and rear differential fluid?
Otherwise, the front differential and rear differential can use the same type of oil if there is no transaxle. Differential fluid changes need to be made periodically for both the front and rear differentials. This is the same concept as when you need to change your engine oil.
