The fuel pumps on John Deere lawn tractors are mechanical, making them longer lasting than electric fuel pumps. The pump bolts to the engine block; as the engine turns over, a rod presses into a diaphragm inside the pump, causing suction. The diaphragm inside the fuel pump is very delicate and can tear easily.

Can a John Deere fuel pump fit a Kohler engine?
This pump is designed to fit various engines but it doesnt work on my John Deere LX255 (Kohler engine) as stated. I compared the fit to the model number on the existing pump.

No fuel pumped after installing with and w/o the provided spacer (the spacer extends pump from the crank case). After several attempts and finally removing the unit and getting gas all over the place, the pump worked when I activated by hand. Also the supplied barbed hose fittings are a stupid design.

Took awhile to figure out, the included brass colored spacer washer was not needed. It pushed the fuel pump actuator lever just far enough not to engage cam that activates pumping action. Just installed the included thin fuel pump gasket ,no spacer, pumps fuel now. When I received and installed the fuel pump it leaks at both ends.
