On to clutching I do clutch between shifts hard to break that habit but I did go out and do a bunch of forward and reverse with out clutching and using foot throttle to get low rpms and not much difference. as in my first post if I plant the bucket and push the tractor back all of 1 or 2 inches it slips right in.

Do you need a clutch on a HST tractor?

Many newer HST tractors do not have manual clutches. On my L4240 HST the clutch is required for the engine to turn over to start. The manual also states (in reference to the range gear shift lever), “Depress the clutch pedal, wait for a moment and then shift the lever.”

#1 thing that I’ve found is that you don’t use UDT or SUDT in the trans/hydro case it will act all kind of weird in cold weather. Do you clutch between forward and reverse shifts? Mine binds if I do that. I’ve found that if I drop RPM’s and shift the shuttle 99% of the time it will slide right in.

Does your tractor have sync-or hyd shuttle. I would think depressing clutch would relieve gear train binding to allow shifting. If your tractor has sync-shuttle I hope the syncronizers aren’t worn out and require replacement similar to a M4900 that I once owned I have a GST transmission ,I now know all about the tire ratio for 4wd tractors.

What should I do if my shifter is stuck in third gear?

If it’s stuck in first gear, use a long screwdriver to pry the large gear backward. If it’s stuck in reverse, push the gear forward. If your shifter is stuck in second or third gear, pry the fork itself forward if stuck in second, backward if stuck in third. Be careful not to go too far; otherwise, it will stick in the opposite gear.

Click to expand… Can’t speak entirely for the current electric shift PRT tractors, but on the previous 3×20 series tractors you could operate them both ways. You could go F or R by using the PRT lever only, or by clutching and shifting the PRT lever, then letting the clutch out.
