Can You Bleed the clutch on a 1973 MGB?

Can You Bleed the clutch on a 1973 MGB?

I am working on a 1973 MGB and I have simply replaced the clutch flexi-hose. The system was dry when I put the new hose on so I would have thought it a fairly straight-forward normal bleed operation to bleed it and get pressure on the slave and lever again. It was working OK before but the hose was brittle, original and very nastily worn.

Why does my MGB clutch not shift into gear?

If you have replaced the original pushrod with a new one and the new pushrod will not go in far enough to allow you to install the clevis pin, remove it and compare its length with that of the original pushrod. Some aftermarket pushrods are (6.35mm) too long.

Since getting to the clutch is such a labor intensive operation, we strongly recommend replacing the disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing if you have a mechanical problem with your clutch. Excess play of the lever will cause premature wear on the throwout bearing.

How long does it take to replace a clutch on a MGB?

Clutch replacement is something I’ve done on a previous B and it took me around 1.5 days of a weekend working single-handedly, the most tricky part being getting the engine back on the gearbox shaft (colourful language time!) and I also had to deal with a broken engine mount with bonding agent, and a leaky seal on the hired engine crane.

What should I do before pulling my MGB engine?

If you own a late model MGB, it’s likely that you can pull the gearbox, replace the clutch, check the rear main bearing for oil leakage, and/or replace the rear main seal with much less effort than you might be led to believe. These are all those wonderful jobs that start with that dreaded phrase: “First remove engine from car”.

What do you need to know about Assembly on a MGB?

10.Assembly Is the proverbial reverse of the foregoing, with a cautionary note regarding the paper gasket between the remote control unit and the gearbox (namely, don’t forget it or you may get a leak), and of course, to fill the gearbox with the appropriate fluid.
