Can a 400 hp camshaft be added to a 300 hp motor?

Can a 400 hp camshaft be added to a 300 hp motor?

If you have a 300-hp cam in a motor where the rest of the components are capable of making 400 hp, adding the 400-hp camshaft should actually have predictable results. This is the case with the LS, as even the wimpy, stock 706 heads used on our 5.3L test motor flowed enough to support over 450 hp.

How many horsepower does a 5.3L Cam have?

The final mods included a set of 1 7/8-inch, long-tube headers and FAST XFI management. Run with the stock LM7 cam, this 5.3L combination produced 359 hp at 5,300 rpm and 384 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. After establishing our baseline, we proceeded to perform the cam swap. Off came the coil packs, valve covers and factory rocker arms.

What was the intake manifold before the 5.3L test?

Before the intake test, the 706 heads used on the 5.3L were augmented with a set of 26918 valve springs. We also had a TBSS intake sitting around just begging to be used so we upgraded the early truck manifold.

Why was the cam timing so aggressive on the LS?

The reason for this is (unlike the original small block), the LS was blessed with an overabundance of cylinder-head flow. Toss insufficient displacement, compression and an efficient intake manifold, and the LS was just begging for aggressive cam timing.

How much valve lift does a cam Hughes Engine have?

Using a 1.5:1 rocker ratio this equals .075″ valve lift. Any duration less than this has no effect on power. Understanding the duration at 0.050″ may seem confusing but the important thing that must be remembered is: as the duration at 0.050″ gets larger the camshaft gets larger and vise versa.

How is the size of the camshaft determined?

When selecting any camshaft for your engine/chassis combination, the size must be determined by the duration at .050″ tappet (lifter) rise. Using a 1.5:1 rocker ratio this equals .075″ valve lift. Any duration less than this has no effect on power.
